Effectivness

Will the wall actually be helpful in stopping illegal immigration?

Will the wall work?

President Trump should not build a wall along the U.S.- Mexico border because it will not stop illegal immigration. Although the idea of a border wall seems effective in theory if the wall is the only device implemented then people can and eventually will find a way around, over, or maybe even under it.   Trump's own Homeland Security Secretary, John F. Kelly, stated: "If you build a wall, you would still have to back that wall up with patrolling by human beings, by sensors, by observation devices"(Nixon). The man Trump himself placed in charge of the department overseeing the wall's construction even believes it will not do the trick alone. This should give great weight to doubts about the wall's usefulness. Additionally, Mr. Kelly, even  said, "[Security cannot] be attempted as an endless series of ‘goal-line stands’ on the one-foot line at the official ports of entry or along the thousands of miles of border between this country and Mexico” (Nixon) Stopping illegal immigration at the border is already too late to be effective and efforts should be implemented to address the root of the problem. The factors that lead to illegal immigration. The wall will end up just being a large waste of labor, money, and time.

Is there even a problem?

Furthermore, why build a wall to stop illegal immigration when illegal immigration is already on its way down? According to Pew Research, a respected non-partisan think-tank located in Washington D.C., unauthorized immigrants from Mexico in the United States have already been on the decline since 2009 (Manuel). This stands in sharp contrast to the fake news Trump himself has made popular that our borders are being overrun by illegal immigrants. In total, illegal Mexican immigrant crossings the U.S. border are at their lowest rates since the 1970s (Porter). Trump's wall is attempting to attack a problem that already seems to be alleviating itself. Are there not other U.S. problems to deal with that are not so self-correcting?
